This was explained to me once and when I sat down and figured out the logic, it became blatantly clear. When someone has a birthday, they are actually celebrating the completion of that particular year, not the beginning of it. So, on your 35th, you were actually starting your 36th, which you finished yesterday, so now, you have completed 36 years and you are in the process of experiencing your 37th year of existence on this planet.
